More Information About our Children’s Education Program

Curriculum:
For the 2024-2025 Sunday School curriculum, MSSS is continuing to incorporate two initiatives. The first is the incorporation of Quranic instruction and the second is the implementation of the Ghazali Children curriculum to support our young learners’ understanding of Islam and spirituality.

Quran instruction will include learning the Arabic alphabet and developing fluency of Quranic text. Ghazali Children aims to develop children’s knowledge, awareness, and practice of Islamic spirituality. This includes the ability to recognize and maintain innate human dignity, becoming self-observant, self-correcting, and developing noble character while living a life of humility and in service.

For more information, please visit Ghazali Children’s website at: https://ghazalichildren.org

Class Levels:
All levels are structured in three parts: Qur’an Instruction, Islamic Aqeedah, and Ghazali Children, with time for snack, break, and prayer (for level 3) for a whole-child centered approach to learning. Each level is co-taught by two teachers to support the daily management of students and classroom activities. Classes begin with mindful meditation and movement to prepare students for mindful learning and emphasize the importance of Islamic meditation and its impact on one’s spiritual heart. Then, students engage in individualized Qur’an Instruction through small and whole group format. Classes then transition into learning about Islamic creed (Aqeedah), to learn and reiterate basic Islamic knowledge. The largest portion of classes is dedicated to learning about the spiritual heart using the Ghazali Children (GC) curriculum. GC is taught using inquiry based learning to develop a strong sense of identity, self-awareness, and community as students engage in critical thinking and analysis.

Our History:
MakeSpace began its Sunday School program in January 2017 led by Principal Ms. Sonia Siddiqui, three teachers, and three levels ranging in age from 5-10.  After its inaugural run ended in May, we launched our first full year of programming on October 1, 2017 with Principal Ms. Safa Suleiman at the helm. We added a fourth level for students ages 11-13. The 2018-2019 academic year was led by Ms. Rubina Kapil and Ms. Sophia Yousofy as the Sunday School Principals. For the following three academic years (2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22), including the switch to virtual classes due to Covid19 and back to in-person instructions, Ms. Sameen Mansoor led the Sunday School, completing her term as the longest-serving Principal. Currently, the Sunday School is led by our Director of Children’s Education, Dr. Fatima Baig, who joined our team in August 2022.
